Which insurance do I need as a police officer?
Specialist cover for police officers: we show you which insurance policies suit your profession.
As a police officer, you're exposed to various risks every day, whether on duty or in your free time. That's why it's important to protect yourself accordingly so that you're well covered if the worst happens. Here is a checklist of the recommended insurance policies for police officers:
Insurance you should know about:
1. Service incapacity insurance (Dienstunfähigkeitsversicherung):
Service incapacity insurance is particularly important for police officers, as the job often involves increased risks. It protects you financially if you can no longer work because you've been declared unfit for service.
2. Occupational disability insurance:
Occupational disability insurance steps in if you're permanently unable to work in your profession as a police officer due to illness or an accident. It ensures that you remain financially protected even in such a case.
3. Liability insurance:
Private liability insurance is important protection for damage you accidentally cause to third parties, whether in your free time or in the context of your duties.
4. Accident insurance:
Accident insurance gives you financial protection in the event of accidents, both on duty and in your free time. It can include, for example, disability benefits and a daily hospital allowance.
5. Official liability insurance (Diensthaftpflichtversicherung):
Check whether your employer (Dienstherr) provides official liability insurance for you. It protects you against compensation claims while carrying out your official duties.
6. Legal expenses insurance:
Legal expenses insurance covers the costs of legal disputes and provides you with legal support to represent your interests.
7. Health insurance:
As a police officer, you are usually covered by statutory health insurance. However, also look into supplementary insurance that offers, for example, better benefits in hospital or for alternative treatments.
8. Private pension insurance / retirement provision:
Plan ahead early for your financial future and take out a private pension insurance policy or another form of retirement provision so that you're well covered in retirement.
9. Household contents and buildings insurance:
Make sure your belongings at home are adequately insured. Household contents insurance protects your movable possessions, while buildings insurance protects your own house or flat.
10. Travel insurance:
If you like to travel, travel insurance is recommended. It includes, for example, trip cancellation insurance, international health insurance and baggage insurance.
What matters is that you carefully check your individual insurance needs and get advice from an insurance expert. That way, you can make sure you're optimally covered and can concentrate on your work as a police officer.
